Liverpool narrowly defeated Fulham 1-0 at Anfield on May 3, 2023 in stark contrast to the drama of their game against Spurs. The only goal of the game came from a penalty kick taken by Mohamed Salah in the 39th minute. Jurgen Klopp’s side had more control of the game than the previous match, but still lacked composure in their attacking play.
The Reds’ pressing was more effective in the opening stages, with the front four of Diaz, Jones, Nunez, and Salah supported by Henderson and Fabinho. Nunez won a penalty by closing down Issa Diop, producing the first goal of the game indirectly. Liverpool’s defensive structure looked more solid, with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk doing a better job of covering the space in transition from attack to defence. Alisson was also on hand to bail out the team when needed.
Liverpool have four of their last six games at Anfield, including two against relegation battlers Leicester and Southampton. This is a chance to make Anfield a fortress again and end the season on a positive note. The Reds are four points behind Manchester United in fourth, but a top four finish looks unlikely.
