Lionel Messi scores stunning free kick on Inter Miami debut in front of star-studded crowd

Lionel Messi was thrilled to to mark his Inter Miami debut with a stunning goal in front of a star-studded crowd. The likes of  LeBron James, tennis legend Serena Williams and US TV star Kim Kardashian were all in attendance hoping to witness history being made as the 36-year-old made his first appearance for his new club.

Along with the A-listers, 20,000 fans packed into the DRV PNK Stadium hoping to witness history and they were treated to another picture book magical Messi moment when the former Barcelona star curled home an injury-time free-kick to seal a 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul.

Messi’s Joy After Victory

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the game, Messi said: ‘We wanted to start like this by giving these people a victory. We knew that it was very important for us to start this championship in winning fashion. Luckily we were able to do it in the end, and I am very happy.

‘It is a huge joy to get this first victory after how we have done in the league. It is important to start winning, beyond the fact that it is another championship, for confidence it is very good to get victories.’

The Match

Messi started the game on the bench but was introduced eight minutes after the interval with his side leading thanks to Robert Taylor’s opener shortly before half-time.

The match appeared destined for penalties, however, when Urien Atuna equalised just 10 minutes after Messi had been introduced to the fray.

But, as so often throughout his storied career, Messi came up with the decisive moment with virtually the last kick of the game, sending a perfectly flighted left-footed shot over the wall and beyond the despairing dive of Andres Gudino.

Inter Miami Manager’s Reaction

Inter Miami manager, Tata Martino, who coached Messi during his time in charge of Barcelona had seen it all before and felt the outcome was almost inevitable.

‘It’s common for him, you know,’ Martino said. ‘It looks absolutely normal, but it’s not … we’re speaking about the GOAT.’

It was a fitting way for Messi to mark his first appearance for his new club and a reminder of why he is considered one of the greatest players of all time.
