Liverpool’s Strikers Struggle to Find the Back of the Net
In a slightly concerning revelation, Jurgen Klopp and Alisson have addressed Liverpool’s recent goal-scoring struggles following their 0-0 draw against Manchester United.
A Rare Goalless Game for Liverpool
The draw against Manchester United at Anfield marked the first time in 35 games that Liverpool failed to score. Despite their overall impressive goal tally of 36 in 17 league games this season, Liverpool’s forwards have been struggling to find the back of the net in recent matches.
A Lack of Goals from the Attackers
According to Andrew Beasley, Jurgen Klopp’s attackers have only scored once in the last five matches. The sole goal came from Mo Salah against Crystal Palace, while the midfielders and defenders have contributed four and three goals, respectively, during the same period.
Individual Struggles
Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have been goalless since November 30, with Gakpo mostly being used as a substitute midfielder. Darwin Nunez has also failed to score in his last 10 appearances for the club.
Alisson and Klopp Address the Issue
Goalkeeper Alisson acknowledged that improving their goal-scoring is a significant area of concern. He mentioned that there were instances where they could have passed the ball to a teammate in a better position instead of taking shots. Klopp also expressed his disappointment with Liverpool’s attacking output, highlighting missed opportunities and the need to utilize overlapping runs.
Challenges Faced by the Forwards
The blame does not solely lie with the forwards. Nunez often finds himself isolated when running onto the ball in channels, while Diaz receives the ball far from the goal most of the time. Even Salah struggled to link play until Joe Gomez came on as a substitute.
Reigniting the Goal-Scoring Touch
Liverpool’s success in the past was partly due to the ability of their front three, including Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Salah, to perform even if not all of them were at their best. However, with the current struggles, a slight change or spark may be needed to reignite their goal-scoring touch.
