Sheffield United Interested in Signing Danny Ward on Loan
Sheffield United is reportedly interested in signing Leicester’s out-of-favour goalkeeper, Danny Ward, on loan for the remainder of the season. The Blades’ manager, Chris Wilder, sees this as an opportunity to boost Ward’s chances of securing the Wales No.1 spot for Euro 2024. If Wales qualifies through the play-offs in March, Ward wants to be prepared for the Euro finals.
Ward, who is 30 years old, would welcome the chance to return to the Premier League. Despite costing £12.5 million in 2018, he is currently Leicester’s third-choice goalkeeper and the club is open to selling him. However, a loan deal may be more suitable for both parties, and a commitment to a permanent transfer could seal the deal.
If Ward joins Sheffield United on a temporary basis, one of the Blades’ domestic loan players will have to leave. Currently, they have Leicester left-back Luke Thomas and Manchester City attacker James McAtee on loan. Thomas is the most likely candidate to be let go.
Sheffield United also considered signing experienced goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who now plays for Anderlecht in Belgium. However, the 37-year-old Dane may be too expensive for the club.
If a deal for Ward cannot be reached, Cardiff City is ready to make a rival loan offer.
In other news, Derby County is keeping an eye on Sheffield United midfielder Ollie Arblaster. The 19-year-old recently returned from a loan spell at Port Vale but may be sidelined for a month due to a knee injury sustained during a Carabao Cup match against Middlesbrough last month. Derby County will monitor his recovery before making any decisions.
