Manchester City in Talks with Juventus over Kalvin Phillips Loan Deal
Manchester City is currently in discussions with Juventus regarding a potential loan deal for midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window. Phillips, who joined Manchester City from Leeds in 2022 for £42m, has struggled to secure regular playing time since his move. He has only made four Premier League appearances this season, all as a substitute, and started just one of City’s six Champions League group stage matches.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has not been convinced that Phillips deserves a spot in the starting lineup on a consistent basis. As a result, Phillips is eager to seek out first-team opportunities elsewhere. The Times reports that Juventus is now in talks with the Premier League champions to secure Phillips on loan for the remainder of the season.
Juventus, currently sitting second in the Serie A table, is challenging for the league title this season. Newcastle is also rumored to be interested in signing Phillips on loan, but no official move has been made yet. Bayern Munich has also been linked with the midfielder.
Phillips is determined to pursue regular playing time in order to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming European Championship. Despite his limited appearances for Manchester City, Phillips has managed to stay in Southgate’s plans. However, he knows that his chances of representing his country will improve if he plays regularly in the second half of the season.
Guardiola has acknowledged that he struggles to see Phillips in his starting lineup but admires his exemplary attitude. The manager expressed his regret over not giving Phillips more opportunities and praised his character and behavior within the team. Guardiola stated that he would be pleased if Phillips decides to stay at the club beyond January.
