Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool have agreed to sell Jordan Henderson to Saudi Pro League
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he has approved the club’s decision to sell midfielder Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League. Liverpool have now agreed a £12 million deal with Al-Ettifaq, who are now managed by Steven Gerrard, and Henderson is now expected to finalise his move to Saudi Arabia.
Henderson, 33, has agreed a deal with Al-Ettifaq worth £350,000 a week. The midfielder has captained Liverpool since Gerrard’s departure in 2015 and travelled with the squad for their pre-season camp in Germany, but was not included in the squad for their 4-2 win over Karlsruher on Wednesday.
Klopp Approves of Sale
When asked about Henderson’s absence after the game, Klopp said: ‘There’s actually nothing to say. As long as things are not really finally decided, we don’t have to talk about it. There will be a moment where we probably have to talk about it, but it’s not now. I don’t know that anything is decided, which means nothing to say in the moment. But that’s even better for you because you can speculate, which is much more fun! If I say something then it’s finished! In the end, all of these decisions are made by me. And because I respect the players a lot, it’s usually [with the player’s] consent. It was in this case, and it is all fine.’
Henderson’s Liverpool Career
Henderson has been a key part of Liverpool’s success since joining from Sunderland in 2011. He has made over 300 appearances for the Reds, winning the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Anfield.
The midfielder was also part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and has been capped 45 times for his country.
What’s Next For Liverpool?
With Henderson set to depart, Klopp will now have to find a replacement for the midfielder. The Reds have already been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, while they could also look to bring in a more experienced player such as Real Madrid’s Luka Modric or Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic.
Klopp will also be looking to strengthen other areas of his squad ahead of the new season, with a new goalkeeper and centre-back likely to be top of his list of priorities.
