Jose Mourinho’s Insight: England Job Offer and Euro 2024 Triumph Prediction
Jose Mourinho, the renowned Portuguese football manager, has recently made some interesting revelations about his association with England and his predictions for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament. Mourinho, who was once offered the England job, believes that the current generation of English players is more than capable of securing the title.
England, currently managed by Gareth Southgate, is heading to Germany this summer with hopes of securing their maiden Euros title. After reaching their first final in 2021, the Three Lions are among the favorites to taste glory. With superstars like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham in their squad, they have a formidable lineup.
Mourinho, while hoping for his nation Portugal to repeat their heroics of 2016, feels that England could come out on top due to their ‘very good’ current crop of players. In an interview with the Vibe with Five podcast, he said, “It is a very good generation. They got to the Euro [2020] final, they can do it [win Euro 2024]. The mentality of the guys who have gone abroad, [Jude] Bellingham for example, I believe there is something that separates him from the boys that were born in England, developed in England, and are playing in England. He can add something different, he is a kid of the world. He has a big, big personality.”
Mourinho also expressed his admiration for Gareth Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland, whom he worked with during his time at Chelsea. He believes that they have done a fantastic job with the England team but feels that something is missing. Mourinho said, “Southgate with Steve Holland, he was my assistant at Chelsea and what a person, they’ve done a beautiful job there, but it’s just missing that little bit. I cannot say I wish they do it because I think Portugal can do it and I wish Portugal do it.”
Interestingly, Mourinho also revealed that he turned down the opportunity to coach the England national team back in 2007. After Steve McClaren was sacked, Mourinho was offered the job but declined it. Fabio Capello eventually took charge. Mourinho explained his decision, saying, “I could have been the coach of [the England] national team. I had it there on the table. [I turned it down] because I always had national team jobs as something I wouldn’t enjoy. It was in 2007-08 and Mr. Capello got the job.”
Although Mourinho spoke openly about his time in charge of Manchester United, he has ruled out a second stint at Old Trafford. It seems that his focus is now on his current role as the head coach of AS Roma.
As Euro 2024 approaches, football fans around the world are eagerly waiting to see if England can fulfill Mourinho’s prediction and secure their first-ever Euros title. With their talented squad and the guidance of Gareth Southgate, they certainly have a strong chance of achieving glory.
