Premier League January Transfer Window: When Does It Open For Clubs?

The summer transfer window has now slammed shut for Premier League clubs after 11 weeks of hectic spending, with managers across the division now having to do with the squads they have until the opening of the January transfer window next year.

The Premier League transfer record was smashed twice in the summer – first with Declan Rice’s £105 million move from West Ham to Arsenal, before then being eclipsed by Moises Caicedo’s £115 million move to Chelsea from Brighton.

Rice’s close childhood friend Mason Mount left boyhood club Chelsea to link up with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United for £60 million, whose departure has been softened by the arrival of Manchester City academy graduate Cole Palmer for £42.5 million.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have compensated for the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League by signing Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and, on transfer deadline day, Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich.

So, when exactly will the January 2024 transfer window open for the 20 Premier League clubs? Here is when the transfer merry-go-round will swing into action again in the New Year.

When Does The January Transfer Window Open?

The Premier League has confirmed that the January 2024 transfer window will open on Monday, January 1. The window will stay open until Thursday, February 1 at 11pm GMT.

To ensure harmonisation across the five major leagues in Europe, the transfer window for clubs in Ligue 1, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A will also close on the same day. The EFL will also operate to the same timescale.

Can Clubs Still Sign Players Outside Of The Window?

Teams will be able to sign players between now and the opening of the January transfer window. However, clubs will not be able to register their new signings until the window opens.

The only exception is the Premier League and EFL emergency loan rule, which allows clubs to sign a goalkeeper on a loan if all the keepers in their first team squad are unavailable due to either injury or suspension.

Free agents – players who are not contracted to a club – are able to sign deals with teams at any point throughout the year.

With the January transfer window now just around the corner, Premier League clubs will be looking to bolster their squads ahead of the second half of the season. Keep an eye out for all the latest news and rumours as we approach the opening of the window in January.
