Jamie O’Hara, a former Tottenham midfielder, has criticised the current Spurs squad following their latest defeat to Bournemouth. The north London team had a chance to take a top-four advantage against the relegation-threatened Cherries but lost in devastating circumstances. Newcastle, one of Spurs’ rivals for Champions League qualification, had lost 3-0 to Aston Villa earlier in the day, and they looked set to be punished when Heung-min Son put Spurs a goal ahead. However, Bournemouth took a 2-1 lead through Matias Vina and Dominic Solanke before Dango Ouattara won the match after an Arnaut Danjuma equaliser.
O’Hara expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance on talkSPORT, saying, “It’s a shambles. I’m watching this game today and there’s no fight, there’s no hunger, there’s no real determination to win it.” He compared Spurs’ performance to that of Manchester United, who lost Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Marcus Rashford and had Bruno Fernandes sent off. He thought Spurs could have taken advantage of the situation but saw nothing from them that warranted being in the top four.
O’Hara called for a complete overhaul of the team, including the staff and players. He criticised the players’ mentality, comparing it to his time at the club between 2005 and 2011. “It’s a weak, soft mentality – they’re a bunch of losers! The team I played in when I was at Tottenham, we weren’t Man United and we weren’t competing with them, but we were a good team! We had winners, people who wanted to win. Alright, we won one trophy, the League Cup, but we were getting there.”
O’Hara praised players such as Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Jermain Defoe, and Robbie Keane, who he said wanted to win every game. He criticised the current squad, saying, “We’ve got Harry Kane and he’s world-class, but I look at the rest of them and think, ‘Do you really want to win?’ They look like they don’t even care!”
Interim boss Stellini also expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance. He said, “It is a really tough day today because we didn’t achieve what we want. We gave everything on the pitch and I think everyone understands this. But we allowed them to score the first two goals too easily. Too easy, too easy. It is difficult then when you are one goal down. You have to be strong in this moment to create a unit and have our fans with us.”
Stellini added that the team tried to push in the second half and were close to scoring. However, they allowed Bournemouth to score three goals, and Richarlison missed an opportunity to win the game. Stellini said that when a team scores one goal, the mindset should be to score again, but Spurs didn’t do this.
In conclusion, O’Hara and Stellini criticised Spurs’ performance against Bournemouth. O’Hara called for a complete overhaul of the team, including the staff and players, while Stellini expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance and mindset. Spurs will need to improve if they want to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League.
