Jamie Carragher slams ‘nightmare’ debut for Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo
Chelsea’s new signing Moises Caicedo was in for a rude awakening on his debut for the club, as Jamie Carragher slammed the Ecuadorian midfielder for a ‘nightmare’ performance.
The 19-year-old was named on the bench for Chelsea’s trip to West Ham on Sunday afternoon, but was brought on with 25 minutes plus injury time to play.
Unfortunately, Caicedo’s debut didn’t go to plan, as he lost a number of early challenges and had Roberto Sanchez to thank for keeping out Pablo Fornals after the Ecuadorian midfielder gifted him possession close to Chelsea’s box.
But Caicedo only had himself to blame when he brought down former Chelsea full-back Emerson in the area in the 93rd minute. Lucas Paqueta stepped forward to convert the spot kick, meaning Chelsea have just one point from their first two matches.
And Carragher says the incident summed up a ‘nightmare’ debut for Caicedo.
‘That man Caicedo has had a bit of a nightmare since he came on you have to say,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports. ‘It’s a poor, lazy challenge. Emerson always knows he’ll get there before him. We all did watching it!
‘He hasn’t started great since coming on.’
Chelsea’s Struggles Continue
Chelsea have endured a difficult start to the season, with their only point coming from a 0-0 draw against Brighton. The Blues have struggled to create chances and have looked vulnerable at the back, with Frank Lampard’s side conceding three goals in their opening two matches.
The Blues have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks, including Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, but they will need to shore up their defence if they are to challenge for the title this season.
Caicedo is still young and has plenty of time to develop into a top player, but his debut performance will not have impressed Lampard or the Chelsea fans.
What Next For Chelsea?
Chelsea will be looking to get back to winning ways when they face Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. The Blues will be hoping to use the game as an opportunity to build some momentum ahead of their next Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Lampard will be hoping that his side can start to find some form and put together a run of positive results, as they look to challenge for the title this season.
