Leeds United are keen to bring James Milner back to his first club when he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season, but their chances of doing so depend on their Premier League status. The 37-year-old is set to extend his stay in the top flight and Brighton have emerged as favourites to sign him on a free transfer. Leeds will not be able to offer the same excitement as the Seagulls, but they may be able to pull on Milner’s heartstrings by offering him a return to his first club. Milner began his footballing career at Leeds in 1996 and made his Premier League debut for them in 2002 aged just 16.
The Yorkshire club are part of a fierce relegation battle and have tasked Sam Allardyce with keeping them in the top flight. With two games to play they are 18th on 31 points, one point behind Everton and three behind Nottingham Forest, with Leicester also scrapping away in 19th on 30 points. Leeds’ remaining two games are against West Ham and Tottenham and must hope either Everton stumble against Wolves or Bournemouth or Forest slip up twice against Crystal Palace and Arsenal. Relegation to the Championship would likely end any hopes of signing Milner, with Europe-bound Brighton keen on him.
