Two Italian footballers, Mattia Lucarelli and Federico Apolloni, are set to face a preliminary hearing amid an investigation into allegations that they gang-raped a 22-year-old American student they met in a nightclub. The alleged crime took place on the night of March 26-27, 2020, at a private apartment in Milan. The city’s prosecutor’s office has requested an indictment on the charge of sexual assault for the footballers, both aged 23, as well as for the three friends who allegedly participated in the rape. The investigating judge has set the preliminary hearing for June 13. Lucarelli, who plays for Serie D side Follonica, and Apolloni, a Livorno central midfield, were placed under house arrest on January 20 but the measure was later revoked by the Court of Review. Both players have denied the accusations.
