An inquest has been opened into the tragic death of Michael Jones, a construction worker who lost his life after an incident at the site of Everton’s new stadium. The 26-year-old ventilation engineer was working at Bramley Moore Dock when the incident occurred on August 14. Despite being rushed to Aintree Hospital with head injuries, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
## The Incident
During the inquest, it was revealed that Michael, who was wearing a hard hat, had been working on a scissor ladder when he became caught between a beam and the machinery. A colleague noticed that a lift had stopped working and raised the alarm after climbing on top to release it. The exact details surrounding the incident are still under investigation by the Health and Safety Executive, which is conducting a complex and technical investigation.
## A Tragic Loss for Everton Fan
Michael, an avid Everton fan whose middle name was Goodison after their current ground, was thrilled to be working on the stadium where his favorite football team would play next season. His family described him as “so happy” to be involved in such a significant project. In a statement on the Everton website, his sister, Gemma Leary, expressed their devastation: “Michael was the baby, a boy after three daughters. He was adored by everyone, and he loved spending time with his dad watching Everton.”
## Tributes and Support
The tragic incident has deeply affected the Everton community and beyond. Everton’s manager, Sean Dyche, joined others in laying flowers at a floral tribute outside the stadium. Club ambassadors Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart, as well as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, also paid their respects. Everton held a minute’s applause in Michael’s memory during their match against Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend. The club has committed to consulting with Michael’s family and stadium builders Laing O’Rourke to create a lasting tribute in his honor.
## The Inquest Proceedings
The inquest into Michael’s death was opened at Gerard Magella courthouse, just a few minutes’ walk from the site of the incident. Coroner Andrew Rebello stated that he was awaiting the results of a full post-mortem examination. He also acknowledged that a comprehensive investigation involving the Health and Safety Executive was underway. The inquest was opened without the presence of Michael’s family and has been adjourned until February 29 next year. A full hearing will be scheduled at a later date to determine the exact cause of death and the events leading up to it.
