Liverpool’s Diogo Jota faced criticism from Premier League legends Alan Shearer and Ian Wright after his penalty incident in Liverpool’s victory over Newcastle. The Reds secured a 4-2 win, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice and providing an assist before leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations. Salah had a penalty saved by Martin Dubravka but eventually found the back of the net. Jota was played through on goal but went down after a delayed reaction to contact from the goalkeeper. Shearer called it “embarrassing,” while Wright sarcastically remarked that Jota would rather go down for a penalty than score in an empty net. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that the second penalty was not a penalty at all. Newcastle has now lost seven of their last eight games and slipped to ninth in the table, while Liverpool moved three points clear at the top of the league.
