Former England and Chelsea player Glenn Hoddle has suggested that Chelsea should sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen instead of Manchester United this summer. Chelsea’s lack of goalscoring ability was on display once again during their 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday, with the team having scored just 29 goals in the Premier League this season. Osimhen, on the other hand, has been in sublime form for Napoli this season, scoring 25 goals in 29 appearances. Manchester United is also reportedly interested in signing the Nigerian international.
Hoddle believes that Osimhen would be the only player that Chelsea needs to sign this summer. He said, “They do need a No.9, they do need a goalscorer. But I’ll tell you what, whoever comes in as a new manager for this squad, normally you’d say when a new manager comes in he’s going to want to bring some of his own players in, I think he only needs a No.9, I think everything [else] is there.”
Hoddle added that Chelsea has a strong defense and midfield and only needs a striker who can score 20 goals for them. He also noted that Chelsea has created many clear and good chances over the season but has struggled with their conversion rate.
Hoddle believes that Osimhen would be an excellent addition to Chelsea’s squad and would score many goals for the team. He said, “Without a doubt, he’s number one, but there are a few clubs after him. But if you put him in a Chelsea shirt he will score a load of goals.”
Hoddle also commented on Chelsea’s decision to sack Thomas Tuchel, saying that it was a poor decision for the club. He said, “What he did in a short period of time, you’ve got to look at that, a Champions League winner, you had the foundation there for real success and now they’re grasping for that by trying to go and buy a load of players. Give that money to Tuchel and go and buy what he wants to buy, that would’ve been incredible.”
Overall, Hoddle believes that Chelsea only needs a striker like Osimhen to improve their goalscoring ability and that the team has a strong foundation in defense and midfield.
