Frank Lampard is set to be appointed interim manager of Chelsea until the end of the season, two years after being let go by the club. The 44-year-old ex-Chelsea and England midfielder was in attendance at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, when the Blues drew 0-0 with Liverpool. Lampard had previously managed the club from July 2019 until January 2021, when he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel. His successor, Graham Potter, was sacked on Sunday.
Chelsea currently sit 11th in the Premier League, 14 points outside the top four, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season. They will travel to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday and face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on 12 April. During his first managerial spell at Chelsea, Lampard guided the team to the FA Cup final in his debut season. He led them to 44 wins from 84 matches, but picked up five defeats in his last eight league games, as many as in the previous 23.
After being let go by Chelsea, Lampard took over at Everton in January 2022 but was dismissed eight days shy of his one-year anniversary in the role after nine defeats in 12 Premier League games. Now, he is set to return to Stamford Bridge with the hope of leading Chelsea to a successful end of the season.
