Chelsea Fans Launch ‘Get Them Out’ Campaign Against Club Owners
Chelsea Football Club has been hit with a wave of anger and frustration from its fans as they launch a ‘get them out’ campaign against the club’s owners. Supporters have gone as far as printing stickers depicting Todd Boehly, the head of BlueCo consortium, as a clown, in a clear expression of their discontent.
The change in ownership occurred in May 2022 when BlueCo, led by Boehly along with Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter, and Hansjörg Wyss, took control of the club from Roman Abramovich. While Chelsea enjoyed a successful period under Abramovich’s ownership, the situation has taken a turn for the worse since the new owners took charge.
Last season, Chelsea suffered an abysmal 12th-placed finish in the Premier League, and this season hasn’t been much better, with the team currently sitting 11th in the table. The club has also failed to secure any major silverware since Boehly became a co-owner. Their loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final earlier this year only added to the disappointment.
Another point of contention for fans is the complete overhaul of the squad. The new owners have opted to replace several established stars with young wonderkids on massive contracts, resulting in a spending spree of over £1 billion on new players. This drastic approach has left many fans questioning the direction and decision-making of the club’s owners.
The coaching changes have also added to the frustration. When BlueCo took over, Thomas Tuchel was the head coach, but he was controversially sacked and replaced by Graham Potter. However, Potter’s tenure didn’t last long either, as Mauricio Pochettino took over this summer after Frank Lampard’s interim role.
In response to their growing dissatisfaction, Chelsea fans have taken matters into their own hands. They have created anti-BlueCo stickers with the slogan ‘Clownlake. Three ring circus. Get them out, we want our Chelsea back.’ These stickers are planned to be placed around Stamford Bridge, the club’s home stadium.
The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust has also joined the campaign against BlueCo. In a strongly worded letter addressed to Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, they warned that the lack of clear direction from the owners could lead to “irreversible toxicity.” They expressed their concern that the club is becoming a laughing stock, both on and off the pitch.
The letter from the Supporters’ Trust also hinted at more impactful forms of protest that could be on the horizon if the situation doesn’t improve. They mentioned the possibility of targeted chanting, especially during televised games, as well as more organized and overt forms of protest from certain sections of the fanbase.
The current mood among Chelsea supporters is critically low, and their frustrations cannot be ignored. The fans’ belief that the club has lost its way is growing, and they are determined to voice their discontent until they see change. The ‘get them out’ campaign and the anti-BlueCo stickers are just the beginning of what could be a long battle between fans and owners for the soul of Chelsea Football Club.
