Liverpool’s Premier League Trophy Celebration Just 8 Days Away! Get Excited for Fans’ Unforgettable Experience
Liverpool’s historic Premier League title win in the 2019/20 season will always be remembered as one of their proudest achievements. However, the momentous occasion was tinged with disappointment as the team had to lift the trophy in an empty Anfield due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Little did they know, they missed the opportunity to celebrate their triumph in front of a full stadium by just eight days.
Before the outbreak of the pandemic, Liverpool had all but secured their status as champions. However, with the implementation of lockdown measures, they were forced to lift the trophy without the presence of their beloved fans. Instead of a grand ceremony on the pitch with thousands of supporters, Jordan Henderson led the trophy lift in front of only the families of players and staff, along with select journalists, in an empty Kop.
It has now been revealed by former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore that an offer was made by the Premier League for an unprecedented trophy lift to take place in March. The proposal came from Richard Masters, CEO of the Premier League, who expressed concerns about the uncertainty surrounding the continuation of the season due to the pandemic. Liverpool would have had the opportunity to celebrate their title win in front of a full Anfield if they had beaten Everton and Crystal Palace in their upcoming matches. Unfortunately, they never got the chance as the last real football game played in England was Atletico Madrid’s visit to Anfield, which presented its own challenges.
The clashes with Everton and Crystal Palace were initially scheduled for March 16 and 21 respectively. Liverpool only needed a maximum of six points from these matches to secure the title seven games early. However, due to the suspension of the Premier League, these fixtures were postponed and took place three months later. It wasn’t until July that Jurgen Klopp and his players finally got their hands on the trophy.
Even on the day of the trophy lift, there were last-minute negotiations to allow the families of the players and staff to attend the ceremony. Moore revealed that plans were made for the families to watch the game from outside the stadium in buses and then celebrate with the team afterwards. However, a breakthrough came just four hours before kickoff when a safety certificate was obtained to have the families inside the stadium but out of view. This allowed them to watch the game and join in the celebrations afterwards.
For Moore, it was a difficult day filled with uncertainty and challenges. At one point, he even contemplated driving to Jurgen Klopp’s house to inform him that the planned celebration would not be able to happen. However, in the end, everything fell into place, and it turned out to be a magnificent evening for everyone involved.
Liverpool’s Premier League title win will forever be etched in history. Although they missed out on celebrating in front of their passionate fans by just eight days, the unforgettable experience of lifting the trophy in an empty Anfield and the resilience shown by the club and its supporters during challenging times will always be cherished.
