Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has revealed that Daniel Levy wanted to get rid of a young Harry Kane for just £600,000 at the end of the 2013/14 season. Kane has since gone on to become one of the greatest ever players and all-time top goalscorer for Spurs, having overtaken Jimmy Greaves’ record this season. His future in north London is uncertain with his contract up in 2024 and speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United, especially after Spurs failed to qualify for European football for the first time in 14 years.
Sherwood said that Levy was unconvinced by the then 20-year-old and even suggested to the manager that he should be starting notorious Spurs flop Roberto Soldado instead. He added that Levy had never asked him for the team before and when he mentioned Kane’s name, Levy questioned him about it. He went on to say that Levy and Franco Baldini, the technical director, thought Kane wasn’t Premier League standard and suggested letting him go to Leicester for £600,000.
Sherwood said he told Levy that he wanted to win the football match and that if he wasn’t allowed to play Kane he would stand in the dugout himself. Kane scored his first Premier League goal on his full debut in a 5-1 win against Sunderland and has now scored 280 goals for the Lilywhites, as well as a record 55 goals for England, making Levy and Baldini’s comments all the more laughable. Sherwood added that Kane had always had ability but wasn’t getting appreciated and none of the managers he was loaned out to said he’d become a Premier League player.
