Liverpool vs. Man City: Protest Planned Against Premier League
Liverpool’s upcoming match against Manchester City is set to be accompanied by a unique protest from Everton fans. Last week, Everton was deducted 10 points for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, which has left them tied with Burnley at the bottom of the Premier League table.
In response to this punishment, fan group The 1978s has organized a plane to fly above the Etihad Stadium during the Liverpool vs. Man City match. The group announced on Twitter that due to the kick-off time, the plane will fly over the Etihad instead of Goodison Park. The message on the banner is yet to be determined.
The protest against the Premier League’s decision doesn’t stop there. Steve Rotheram, Mayor of Liverpool, has called the punishment “disproportionately severe” and has appealed for a more lenient approach. Labour MP Ian Byrne has also submitted a Parliamentary Motion condemning the decision and calling for an independent regulator in football.
While Everton fans are understandably unhappy with the verdict, it is important to note that the punishment was handed down by an independent commission and is in accordance with Premier League rules. The comparison to Manchester City’s ongoing financial breach investigation is also worth mentioning, although the scale of that case will take longer to conclude.
It remains to be seen whether these protests will lead to any changes in Everton’s situation. However, as football fans, we can enjoy the spectacle and banter that comes with such events.
