Erling Haaland Reveals Moment He Knew Man City Would Win Premier League Title
Erling Haaland has revealed the moment he ‘knew’ Manchester City would surpass Arsenal to clinch last season’s Premier League trophy. The Gunners looked set to lift their first top-flight title since 2004 but a late capitulation saw Pep Guardiola’s side come out on top instead.
City went on a 12-game unbeaten run in the Premier League between February and May – but there was one result on April 1 which left Haaland knowing that his side were destined for glory – even though they were still five points behind.
The Moment Haaland Knew Man City Would Win
On that specific day, City came from behind to beat Liverpool 4-1 at the Etihad which cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table. ‘For me, it was the Liverpool game at home, I was so nervous,’ Haaland told team-mate Jack Grealish.
‘They went 1-0 up but but if I knew if we won this [match], we would win [the title].’ Grealish then said: ‘I think we were still a fair bit behind though, wasn’t it six points?’ Haaland replied: ‘Yeah, five points or something. But we just had the momentum. We knew we would win games, we went on a run.’
Grealish Did Not See Things The Same Way
Grealish, though, did not see things the same way and was not sure until City faced Arsenal later that month on April 26. ‘For me, it was a bit different,’ Grealish added. ‘I thought [Arsenal] aren’t going to lose here. I was thinking if we can get to that Arsenal game and we’re three points behind them, because we always had better goal difference, then if we win that game, it would be ours to lose. I just knew if we got to that point before the Arsenal game, then I knew we were going to win.’
City vs. Arsenal Showdown
City travel to Arsenal on Sunday in a title showdown with Guardiola adamant that the north Londoners are once again one of his side’s main challengers. Haaland’s words are a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift in the Premier League and how important it is to take advantage of any opportunity.
With both sides looking strong this season, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top when they face off this weekend. It could be the moment when one of them takes a decisive step towards winning the title.
