Danny Murphy has revealed his concerns with the two managers most heavily linked to Chelsea: Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann.

Chelsea are on the hunt for a new head coach after sacking Graham Potter last Sunday, less than seven months after the former Brighton boss replaced Thomas Tuchel.

A wide range of names have been linked, with Nagelsmann emerging as the early frontrunner with the German well-liked by Todd Boehly and out of work having only just been dismissed by Bayern Munich.

However, in the last 24 hours, Enrique has become the favourite to take the reins at Stamford Bridge, with reports claiming the former Barcelona and Spain manager is in London for talks with Chelsea’s board.

The pair are highly-rated coaches but Murphy is unsure if their track records really hold up and whether they can bring the instant success to Chelsea that its owners and fans are desperate for.

‘I’ve been looking and Enrique had some success at Barca but other than that struggled,’ the former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder told talkSPORT.

‘Roma he didn’t do very well, wherever he was in Spain before he went to Barca [Celta Vigo] he struggled. He doesn’t fill me with confidence.’

Enrique spent a single season at Roma, resigning after failing to qualify them for European competition, before guiding Celta to a decent ninth in the La Liga table.

He then won the treble in his first season at Barcelona, adding a few more trophies to his collection before leaving in 2017 with performances and results dipping.

But Barcelona remains the only team he has won silverware with, though he came close with the national team, reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and the final of the 2021 Nations League, though his time in charge ended in embarrassment, losing on penalties in the round of 16 to Morocco at World Cup 2022.

Murphy added: ‘The other one Nagelsmann, he’s only 35. You’re asking him to come into a huge situation and deal with big egos, big players and he’s only had one good year at Munich.’

Like Enrique, Nagelsmann’s only trophies were achieved at one club, though his reputation as a top coach came from his unprecedented success with Hoffenheim, taking a relegation threatened side to the Champions League before a great spell a RB Leipzig.

But like Murphy, Chelsea too have reservations over the former Bayern boss’ tender age, especially after Graham Potter was unable to command the respect of his expensive, elite squad.
