Chelsea Interested in Signing Barcelona Sensation with £8.5m Release Clause
Chelsea is reportedly interested in signing Barcelona’s rising star, Pau Cubarsi, as the defender continues to impress on the senior side. The 17-year-old made his debut for the Catalan giants in January and has since started three La Liga matches. His emergence has been one of the few success stories for Barcelona in what has otherwise been a disappointing start to 2024.
Despite signing his first professional contract with Barcelona just last year, Cubarsi’s progress has highlighted the need for the club to negotiate a new deal. Currently, his contract at the Camp Nou includes a release clause of only £8.5 million. While talks for an improved contract are underway, Premier League clubs have already set their sights on the talented teenager.
According to ESPN, Chelsea is among the clubs interested in signing Cubarsi. Despite their struggles on the pitch, the Blues have been proactive in securing some of the brightest young talents in football. They recently signed Ecuadorian starlet Kendry Paez to a long-term deal. Mundo Deportivo also reports that Chelsea had expressed interest in Cubarsi before he signed his first professional contract with Barcelona last summer.
Manchester City was another club that showed interest in the Spanish youngster last year. However, it seems that Chelsea remains keen on bringing him to Stamford Bridge. Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi, who will step down at the end of the season, has praised Cubarsi as a huge talent. The young defender has already made six appearances under Xavi’s guidance, including starts against Real Betis, Osasuna, and Alaves.
Speaking about Cubarsi’s performance, Xavi said, “He is already playing like a player who is far older than his years. He is aggressive, he does not lose possession and he’s so good at bringing the ball out from the back.” These comments further highlight the potential and skill that Cubarsi possesses at such a young age.
As the transfer window approaches, it will be interesting to see if Chelsea can secure the signing of Pau Cubarsi. With his impressive performances for Barcelona and the endorsement from Xavi, the young defender has certainly caught the attention of Premier League clubs.
