The relationship between Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy is said to be ‘good’ as the pair prepare to reunite when Chelsea visit Tottenham.

A Significant Premier League Clash

Spurs host their London rivals on Monday night in what is a huge Premier League clash for both clubs. Having endured a difficult start to the season, Chelsea need to win to get back to the top-half, while Tottenham are looking to continue their unbeaten start under Ange Postecoglou and three points will put them top of the table.

A Reunion with History

Regardless of the result, it will be a significant occasion: the first time Pochettino will be going up against the club he managed for over five years. The Argentine took over the Lilywhites in May 2014 and enjoyed a fantastic – albeit trophyless – spell there before getting sacked in November 2019 and replaced by Jose Mourinho. He guided his side to the 2019 Champions League final and 2015 League Cup final, and got them close to winning the league twice in 2016 and 2017.

A Souring Relationship

During his final period, Pochettino’s relationship with Spurs chairman Levy soured, particularly over the transfer policy and lack of investment in the playing squad. Though Spurs started the 2019/20 season poorly, with five wins in 17 games, the sacking was deemed as harsh by fans, a viewpoint that has remained given how poorly his successors have fared. The club still haven’t won silverware and under Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte the atmosphere only became more toxic, though things are getting better under Postecoglou.

A Surprising Relationship

Contrary to expectations, the Daily Mail reports that Pochettino and Levy’s relationship is described as good, and they remain in contact. In fact, Levy even sent a text to his former manager wishing him ‘good luck’ when he took the job at Stamford Bridge over the summer. Pochettino was keen on returning to Tottenham after they sacked Conte earlier this year but Postecoglou was selected instead, a decision that has so far worked wonders.
