Xabi Alonso’s Readiness to Replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool Boss Questioned by Peter Crouch
As Liverpool face the imminent departure of their highly successful manager Jurgen Klopp, speculation about his replacement is rife. One name that has been consistently linked with the job is club legend Xabi Alonso, who is currently impressing as the manager of Bayer Leverkusen. However, former Reds striker Peter Crouch has shared his concerns about whether Alonso is ready to take on the role.
Klopp has enjoyed nearly a decade of success at Anfield, securing both Premier League and Champions League titles. Finding a suitable replacement will undoubtedly be a challenging task, with several managers being considered for the job, including Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi. However, Alonso is believed to be at the top of Liverpool’s shortlist, thanks to his remarkable season at Bayer Leverkusen.
Under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen sits comfortably at the top of the Bundesliga, holding a 10-point lead with only 10 games remaining. The team remains unbeaten across all competitions this season, winning an impressive 30 out of their 35 games and scoring 101 goals. With such credentials, it is no surprise that Alonso is seen as the obvious choice to succeed Klopp.
Peter Crouch, who played alongside Alonso during his time at Liverpool, recognizes the Spaniard’s potential but worries that the Liverpool job may have come too soon for him. Crouch describes Alonso as a fantastic person and a diligent learner who always displayed an eagerness to become a manager. However, he believes that following in Klopp’s footsteps at such a massive club will be a daunting task.
Alonso’s appointment as manager of Leverkusen in 2022 marks his first senior managerial role. Prior to that, he spent three years in charge of Real Sociedad B. Despite his success at Leverkusen, there is competition for his services. Bayern Munich, another former club of Alonso’s, is also in search of a new manager, with Thomas Tuchel set to depart in the summer. It is rumored that Alonso may prefer a move to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena over returning to Anfield.
Crouch’s concerns about Alonso’s readiness for the Liverpool job were expressed prior to Leverkusen’s Europa League match against Qarabag. The German team found themselves in a shocking 2-0 deficit, but a last-minute equalizer from Patrik Schick saved them from defeat, preserving their unbeaten status.
As Liverpool fans eagerly await news of Klopp’s successor, the debate about whether Alonso is the right fit for the job continues. Only time will tell if the club decides to take a chance on their former midfielder-turned-manager or opt for a more experienced candidate. Regardless of the outcome, Alonso’s impressive achievements at Leverkusen this season cannot be denied, and his name will likely remain in the conversation surrounding Liverpool’s future.
