Chelsea moved within a point of the top of the Women’s Super League table with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. Sam Kerr scored her 50th WSL goal in the victory, with the Blues now just one point behind leaders Manchester United.
Kerr opened the scoring in the first half, before Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby added further goals in the second period to secure the win for Emma Hayes’ side. The result means that Chelsea are now just one point behind Manchester United, who have a game in hand.
The victory was a deserved one for Chelsea, who dominated the game from start to finish. Kerr opened the scoring in the 24th minute, heading home a cross from Harder to give her side the lead. Harder then doubled Chelsea’s lead shortly after half-time, firing home from close range after a well-worked move. Kirby then added a third goal in the 73rd minute, finishing off a neat passing move to seal the win for Chelsea.
The win was a crucial one for Chelsea, as it keeps them firmly in the hunt for the WSL title. With just four games remaining in the season, they are now just one point behind Manchester United, who have a game in hand.
