Mauricio Pochettino Takes the Reins at Chelsea
Chelsea endured a difficult 2022/23 season, finishing 12th in the Premier League and 54 points behind champions Manchester City. This was the first season under the ownership of Todd Boehly, who made some big changes to the squad, including the January signing of Enzo Fernandez for a British transfer record fee of £106.8m.
Fernandez had been enjoying a great season with Benfica prior to the move and was a key player in Argentina’s World Cup winning campaign in Qatar, picking up the tournament’s Young Player award. His time in west London has been far less successful however, as despite some bright moments he was unable to prevent Chelsea’s plight and could only muster two assists in 22 games.
Enzo Fernandez Throws Support Behind Mauricio Pochettino
The Blues are undergoing much change this summer with plenty of outgoings and incomings expected alongside the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, and Fernandez appears to have thrown his support behind his fellow Argentine, saying he wants only the best for the club. Reflecting on the season, he posted on Instagram: ‘Already enjoying the holidays with my family I can make a brief review of this wonderful year. First of all the family is getting bigger! We are moving forward with the national team. We are moving forward with Chelsea that although the first semester was not as we all wanted, we know that this is a serious project and with people who are looking for the best for the club and this year we will show it!! Let’s go for more!! The best is yet to come!’
Fernandez, Pochettino and Chelsea face a difficult start to the 2023/24 season with a home fixture against Liverpool on 13th August.
Conclusion
Mauricio Pochettino has taken over at Chelsea and Enzo Fernandez has thrown his support behind his fellow Argentine, believing that the Blues will be back to their best under his leadership next season. With plenty of changes expected this summer, it will be interesting to see how Chelsea fare in their first season under Pochettino and whether or not they can challenge for the Premier League title.
