Chelsea Eye Manchester City Starlet Cole Palmer Ahead of Transfer Deadline
Chelsea are eager to sign Manchester City starlet Cole Palmer before the transfer window closes on Friday. While his club have already spent £350million this summer, Mauricio Pochettino is eager for another attacking option to be brought in before Friday’s deadline.
The Blues are considering a number of possible options including Barcelona trio Ansu Fati, Raphinha and Ferran Torres. Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe is also of serious interest but the Gunners will resist any late interest from Stamford Bridge in their academy graduate.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have now added 21-year-old Palmer to their list of players being targeted this week. The club view the versatile attacker as their ‘best solution’ and will soon open talks. However, it remains to be seen whether City are willing to part with Palmer.
Palmer has made 41 appearances in all competitions for City since making his senior debut in September 2020, 19 of those coming in the league. The England Under-21 international has managed 10 minutes of Premier League action this term, coming off the bench for the final 10 minutes in the opening day victory over Burnley. He also started the Uefa Super Cup final against Sevilla, getting on the score sheet before City went onto win 5-4 on penalties.
Chelsea are keen to bring in another attacking option with summer signing Christopher Nkunku out of action until the end of the year and Armando Broja is still recovering. Mykhailo Mudryk is also sidelined.
‘I know the club is working hard to finish our business,’ Pochettino told a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the Carabao Cup second round clash against AFC Wimbledon. ‘There is still a few days. Can something happen? Maybe, yes. At the moment I am only working and tyring to deliver what we want. But there is nothing to communicate at the moment.’
He added: ‘I am happy with the squad we have got so far. If we had someone who can maybe improve different positions of course they are welcome but I am happy with how we are now.’
With just days left until the transfer window closes, Chelsea will be hoping to make a move for Palmer before Friday’s deadline. The Blues have already been busy this summer, signing Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva, and will be hoping to add another attacking option to their squad before the window closes.
