Axel Disasi withdraws from France squad with injury

Chelsea defender Axel Disasi has withdrawn from the France squad for upcoming games against Netherlands and Scotland.

The summer signing from Monaco was called into Les Blues squad to replace Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, who was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury.

But just hours after news of his call-up, the French Football Federation have confirmed Disasi has also been ruled out.

Disasi’s Injury

The 25-year-old underwent a scan with Chelsea after the weekend win over Burnley which revealed ‘a tear in the quadriceps of the left thigh’, according to a statement released by the French FA.

Disasi’s teammate Malo Gusto was also called into Didier Deschamps’ squad on Monday to replaced the injured Jules Kounde.

Disasi’s Role at Chelsea

Disasi has been ever-present in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting at Chelsea this season, starting and completing all eight of their Premier League matches to date in a time when the Argentine has been hit by injuries elsewhere.

Fellow centre-half Wesley Fofana remains a long-term absentee having suffered an ACL injury in the summer with Trevoh Chalobah also still recovering from a knock.

Benoit Badiashile is still to play this season as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered in pre-season. The Frenchman has returned to individual training and could be in line to return when Chelsea host Arsenal in their first game back after the international break on 21 October.

Ben Chilwell meanwhile is facing an extended period out after suffering a hamstring injury in the Carabao Cup win over Brighton. The England international is expected to be ruled out until December.

Reece James meanwhile was unable to make his return against Burnley due to suspension but there is hope he will also be available to captain the Blues against Arsenal.

Chelsea’s Recent Success

Chelsea head into the international break on a high note with that win at Burnley securing their first back-to-back Premier League victories since March.

‘I was telling you in some games, we are building something,” Pochettino said. “We are a young group, we have some experienced players, it’s a matter of time.

‘We were performing very well. I think the team was good, the performance was fantastic and we go to the international break with a different feeling.’

Conclusion

Axel Disasi’s injury is a blow for both France and Chelsea, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been able to cope with injuries so far this season and will be hoping for a strong performance when they face Arsenal after the international break.
