Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen opens up about his desire to stay at the club during the January transfer window. The 22-year-old Dutchman, who has made 10 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, was hoping to break into the Chelsea first-team this season after a successful loan spell at Burnley in 2022-23.
Maatsen helped Burnley secure the Championship title and was named in the second-tier Team of the Season. Despite Chelsea accepting a £31.5m bid from Burnley, Maatsen decided to snub a permanent move to Turf Moor. Instead, he joined Dortmund on a six-month loan and was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for January.
Speaking about his lack of playing time at Stamford Bridge, Maatsen told The Guardian, “I had trust at Chelsea but with the pressure they are under it is sometimes difficult for a manager to let everyone play. He has to make decisions for the team. You have to deal with it as a young player.”
Maatsen expressed his belief in his abilities and his desire to compete for top clubs, despite not getting many opportunities at Chelsea. He emphasized the importance of always being ready in football, as the sport can change quickly.
The young defender’s honesty and determination to succeed are admirable qualities that will undoubtedly serve him well in his career. As he continues to develop at Dortmund, Maatsen will be hoping to make a strong impression and prove his worth to Chelsea upon his return.
