Eric Dier Set to Leave Tottenham Hotspur as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund Battle for His Signature
Eric Dier looks set to leave Tottenham Hotspur before the transfer window closes, with both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund reportedly interested in signing the England international. Dier has been absent from the matchday squad for the opening three Premier League games of the season and was again absent for Spurs’ Carabao Cup clash against Fulham on Tuesday night.
Bayern Munich Interest
Bayern Munich’s interest in Dier comes just a few weeks after they signed Tottenham legend and Three Lions captain Harry Kane. With Dier and Kane close friends, the move could be motivated by the desire to help the latter settle in Munich. Thomas Tuchel also wants to sign a new defensive midfielder, a position that Dier also has much experience in.
Borussia Dortmund Interest
Borussia Dortmund are also keen on the player who began his career abroad with Sporting Lisbon, and the promise of regular minutes will surely appeal with a place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad at stake. Dier joined Spurs in 2014 and has made 361 appearances for the club since, helping them reach two League Cup finals and the 2019 Champions League final.
Ange Postecoglou’s Comments
Speaking about his future with the Lilywhites, manager Ange Postecoglou has suggested it’s not actually over, saying: ‘Eric is part of this team. We left some players on the bench that are very good players. We need a strong squad, it’s not about 11 players. Eric is in the same boat as all the other boys. He’s working hard in training and available for selection. My decisions then are what I think will give us the best chance of success for any given game and then we reassess the week after. Nothing really unusual there.’
Other Spurs Players Linked with Moves Away
Another Spurs player tipped to leave is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is linked with Manchester United, though the Dane did start against Fulham on Tuesday.
Conclusion
It remains to be seen whether Dier will stay at Tottenham or move on before the transfer window closes. With both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund interested in signing him, it looks like his days at Spurs are numbered. For more stories like this, check out our sport page.
