Mikel Arteta Addresses Arsenal’s Complaints About Bukayo Saka’s Treatment
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has clarified that the club did not specifically complain to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) about the rough treatment received by winger Bukayo Saka. Arteta emphasized that referees are already aware of the opposition’s tactics.
Earlier this week, reports emerged that Arsenal had raised concerns about the persistent challenges and lack of protection for Saka. However, considering that Saka is currently the third most-fouled player in the Premier League, it is evident that he receives more protection than all but two players in the division.
During a press conference on Friday, Arteta was asked about the rumors of discussions with the PGMOL regarding Saka. He stated that there is regular communication with the PGMOL but nothing specific about the treatment of Saka.
Arteta mentioned, “I think the referees know the tactics of the opponent and they know that some players are more targeted because of the way they play. Obviously, they buy more tackles, but I think they are aware of that.”
It is worth noting that Arsenal themselves have been involved in buying tackles, as seen in their recent match against Liverpool at Anfield. Saka was also not innocent, as his challenge resulted in Kostas Tsimikas suffering a broken collarbone.
Despite the reaction to the report, Arteta expressed that this issue has been ongoing for two years and is not surprising. He stated, “We have wingers that provoke a lot of fouls and a lot of attention, and that’s something normal.”
To provide context, Saka has been fouled 43 times in the Premier League so far, averaging 2.2 fouls per game. In comparison, Mohamed Salah has only been fouled 18 times, averaging 0.9 fouls per game.
As Arsenal prepares for their FA Cup clash on Sunday, it remains to be seen if the referee will be vigilant in protecting the players.
