Arsenal face anxious wait to discover severity of Gabriel Jesus’ hamstring injury

Arsenal face an anxious wait to discover the severity of Gabriel Jesus’ hamstring injury after the Brazilian was forced off in the Gunners’ 2-1 win against Sevilla in Spain on Tuesday. Jesus set-up Gabriel Martinelli’s opener, before scoring a sublime effort of his own to give Arsenal the victory.

But Jesus’ night was blemished by his second half substitution after he strained his hamstring. Speaking after the victory, Jesus was confident the injury was not severe.

‘I felt something. Let’s see. I did some tests with the physio. It looks not that big [an issue], but let’s see,’ said Jesus. ‘I will have a scan, maybe tomorrow or the day after. Let’s see how it is, but I am pretty sure it will be nothing.’

Jesus was sent for a scan on Thursday, with Arsenal facing an anxious wait over the next 24 hours to get the results. Mikel Arteta is set to speak to the media on Friday ahead of the Gunners’ Premier League clash with Sheffield United. The Spaniard is famously coy about injuries, but could provide an update on whether the striker will be fit to face the Blades.

The severity of Jesus’ injury could have a major impact on Arsenal’s season, with the Gunners currently sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table and looking to secure Champions League football for next season.

Arsenal have been in good form since Arteta took over as manager in December 2019, and Jesus has been a key part of their success, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions this season.

The Gunners will be hoping that Jesus’ injury is not too serious and that he can return to action soon, as they look to continue their push for a top four finish in the Premier League.

In the meantime, Arsenal will have to rely on their other attacking options, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Willian all capable of filling in for Jesus if needed.

Arsenal are also likely to be boosted by the return of Thomas Partey from injury, with the Ghanaian midfielder expected to be back in action soon after missing several weeks with a thigh injury.

It remains to be seen how long Jesus will be out for, but Arsenal fans will be hoping that he can make a swift return and help the Gunners continue their push for a top four finish in the Premier League.
