Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, reportedly considered leaving Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations squad after a dispute with Samuel Eto’o. Onana had been criticized for delaying his arrival to AFCON in order to play for United in a match against Tottenham. Due to adverse weather conditions, Onana arrived just hours before Cameroon’s Group C opener against Guinea. Although he was initially not expected to start, Onana was recalled for Cameroon’s second group game but delivered a poor performance in a 3-1 defeat to Senegal.
For Cameroon’s crucial final group game against Gambia, Onana was dropped to the bench, with Fabrice Ondoa taking his place. Despite this, Cameroon emerged as 3-2 winners and secured their place in the last-16 against Nigeria. Reports emerged after the game that Onana had been involved in a verbal altercation with Eto’o after being told he was dropped from the starting lineup. However, Onana decided to put his personal differences aside and remain with the squad.
According to the Daily Star, Onana considered withdrawing from the squad but ultimately chose to stay. He expects to be named as a substitute for Cameroon’s match against Nigeria. A source close to the Cameroon squad revealed that it was coach Rigobert Song who made the decision to change goalkeepers and reinstate Ondoa as the number one choice.
