Amad Diallo Confirms He Will Not Participate in Africa Cup of Nations
Manchester United star Amad Diallo has confirmed that he will not be participating in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament is set to begin on January 13, with Ivory Coast, Diallo’s homeland, facing Guinea-Bassau in the opening match.
Diallo recently made his comeback from a serious knee injury in United’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, playing 36 minutes. This marked his first appearance of the season and sparked speculation about his potential participation in AFCON. However, manager Jean-Louis Gasset has already finalized his squad, and Diallo did not make the cut.
Contrary to a report by Sky Sports, which claimed that Diallo had been called up to Ivory Coast’s team, the 21-year-old clarified on social media that this was not true.
Instead of joining the national team, Diallo will remain at Manchester United and continue to compete for a spot in the starting XI.
Meanwhile, Cameroon’s Andre Onana and Morocco’s Sofyan Amrabat will be absent from their respective clubs, as they are set to participate in AFCON. This could potentially see them miss up to six games, depending on their training schedules and how far their national teams progress in the tournament.
While Diallo will not be able to compete for silverware with Ivory Coast, Forest trio Willy Boly, Serge Aurier, Ibrahim Sangare, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, and former Premier League stars Sebastien Haller and Nicolas Pepe are among those included in the national squad.
The final of the Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled for February 11.
