Kai Havertz: Ally McCoist and Eniola Aluko Disagree Over Arsenal’s Move
Arsenal are on the brink of signing Kai Havertz from Chelsea in a deal worth £65m. The 24-year-old German international has had a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring the winner in the 2021 Champions League final but largely frustrating Chelsea fans since his £72m move from Bayer Leverkusen three years ago.
Mikel Arteta believes he can get more out of Havertz and sees him as a valuable and versatile member of his squad next season, capable of playing across the front three or even in midfield. Scotland legend Ally McCoist and ex-England forward Eniola Aluko were asked about Arsenal’s move for Havertz on talkSPORT and it quickly became apparent that they were in a disagreement.
Eniola Aluko’s Opinion
Aluko questioned Arsenal’s move for Havertz, saying: ‘Signing Kai Havertz, for me, I don’t really get it. Arsenal need to sign players that are going to make them win the Premier League.’ She added: ‘Havertz scored seven goals last season.’
Ally McCoist’s Opinion
McCoist defended the German, responding: ‘Havertz is one of them, I think he’s a great player. He’s not a centre forward, I don’t care what anyone says he’s not a centre forward, never has been, never will be. He keeps coming towards the ball. I think in a forward area, and from a wide area they’ve already got Saka and Martinelli – different class. But Havertz can play as a No. 10 or in midfield. I actually think he will be a great signing.’
McCoist and Aluko were at least in agreement that Havertz will not be a prolific goalscorer for Arsenal, with the former England star saying: ‘He’s not a 20-25 goal a season player is he? He’s not going to be [Erling] Haaland and that’s what Arsenal need.’
Conclusion
Havertz struggled in a Chelsea team that finished just 12th in the Premier League last season, but is set to join an Arsenal side that spent 248 days sitting top before finishing five points behind Manchester City. It remains to be seen whether Havertz can help Arsenal bridge the gap and become Premier League champions for the first time since 2004.
