Alan Shearer Criticizes Manchester United Winger Antony
Former Newcastle United and England star Alan Shearer has criticized Manchester United winger Antony, saying that playing alongside him would be frustrating. Shearer’s comments came after he defended Rasmus Hojlund following his miss against Liverpool.
United secured a valuable point in a goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Despite criticism from Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk regarding United’s approach to the game, the visitors had two of the best chances to win in the second half.
Alejandro Garnacho almost scored, but Trent Alexander-Arnold managed to intercept the ball. Hojlund also had a golden opportunity but shot straight at goalkeeper Alisson.
Hojlund, who joined United from Atalanta for £72 million in the summer, is yet to score in the Premier League. Shearer sympathizes with the young player, stating that he is not receiving enough support from United’s wide men.
Shearer’s Critique of Antony
Shearer believes that Antony’s playing style would frustrate any center forward. He claims that Antony often runs with his head down and fails to pick up on the movements of his teammates. Additionally, Antony’s tendency to cut inside onto his left foot makes it predictable for defenders, making it difficult for center forwards like Hojlund.
Hojlund had an impressive performance in the Champions League group stages, scoring five goals before United’s elimination from the competition against Bayern Munich.
Shearer remains optimistic about Hojlund’s potential and believes that he needs to improve his link-up play and finishing. However, he emphasizes that the lack of support from United’s wide men, particularly Antony, is hindering Hojlund’s progress.
