Yankees Expected to Hire James Rowson as Hitting Coach
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The New York Yankees are set to bring on James Rowson as their next hitting coach, according to multiple sources within the team. The offer was initially reported by Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
Replacing Sean Casey
If Rowson accepts the position, he will be taking over for Sean Casey, who stepped down from the role in October due to “family reasons” after only half a season. Casey, a former MLB player with no prior coaching experience, was appointed as the hitting coach following the firing of Dillon Lawson when the team’s offense struggled in the first half of the previous season.

Strong Relationship with Aaron Judge
Sources reveal that Rowson, 47, developed a strong bond with star right fielder Aaron Judge during their time together in the Yankees’ minor-league system. Players affectionately refer to Rowson as “J-Ro.” He served as the team’s minor-league hitting coordinator.
Respected Work Ethic and Coaching Approach
Rowson, a native of Mount Vernon, earned high respect within the organization for his dedication, humility, and coaching philosophy. He focuses on maximizing players’ existing skills rather than adhering to the popular “launch-angle” approach. His holistic approach to hitting has garnered praise from multiple sources.
Uncertain Future for Assistant Coaches
It remains unclear how Rowson’s hiring will impact assistant major-league hitting coaches Brad Wilkerson and Casey Dykes, who are still under contract.
Extensive Experience and Track Record
The Yankees have been searching for a hitting coach who can establish their organizational hitting philosophy. Rowson’s previous experience as the team’s minor-league hitting coordinator positions him well for this role. He has also worked with the Chicago Cubs at both the major and minor league levels, the Minnesota Twins (including the record-breaking 2019 team), and the Miami Marlins as a bench coach. In the 2022 season, Rowson served as the assistant hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers.
Rowson’s Background as a Player
Rowson was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the ninth round of the 1994 draft from Mount St. Michael High School in the Bronx. He played four seasons in the minor leagues, reaching High A but never making it to the majors. His career batting average was .193. He also had a stint in independent baseball.
Yankees Aiming for a Rebound
After a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016, the Yankees are determined to bounce back. General Manager Brian Cashman referred to the previous season as a “disaster.”
