Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has been cleared of any involvement in a potential betting scam. The Football Association (FA), Gambling Commission, and National Crime Agency (NCA) launched an investigation into Xhaka after he received a yellow card for time-wasting during a match against Leeds in December 2021. The investigation even looked into alleged involvement from the Albanian mafia. However, after multiple investigations, Xhaka has been cleared of any wrongdoing. Suspicious betting patterns were picked up regarding the booking, including one bet worth £52,000 being placed on him receiving the caution. The FA investigated the alleged offence for six months before passing the matter onto the NCA, who have now dropped the case due to a lack of evidence. Xhaka is said to be nearing a return to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, with Arsenal set to receive £15million for his transfer.
