After 120 minutes of goalless football, the FA Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Brighton went to a penalty shoot-out. Wout Weghorst scored his effort and then walked back to the centre circle, where he kissed the ball before handing it to Solly March with a few words exchanged in the process. March’s penalty was then sent over the bar by David de Gea, leaving Victor Lindelof to score the winning spot kick. Weghorst later revealed that he had tried to give his team an advantage by saying something to March, but ultimately felt sorry for him after he missed.
The first 12 penalties were all successfully converted by Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Marcel Sabitzer and Weghorst himself. Erik ten Hag praised Sancho and Rashford for their composure, as they had both missed crucial penalties in the Euro 2020 final against Italy. Ten Hag noted that they were both comfortable with taking penalties in training and that their experience would help them in the future.
