Wolves set to win race for former Manchester United target Matheus Cunha amid Arsenal and Aston Villa interest in Atletico Madrid forward

Wolves are close to signing Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha as coach Julen Lopetegui looks to reinforce his attacking line.

Lopetegui was hired before the World Cup break with Wolves battling to avoid relegation and is targeting quick business in January.

One of the areas they are looking to improve is in attack as they need more goals in the side, having netted just eight times in the Premier League this season.

Cunha has been looking to leave Atletico Madrid for a while having seen opportunities limited at the club since joining them 15 months ago from Hertha Berlin.

It’s likely he will leave the Spanish club as he is not a major part of Diego Simeone’s plans, with the manager open to a sale to make space for others.

talkSPORT understands Wolves are poised to sign him on an initial loan deal, with an option of a £40 million permanent transfer in the summer.

In his time at Atletico Madrid, Cunha has made 54 appearances – most of which have come off the bench – and he scored seven goals for them in that time.

There has been plenty of Premier League interest in Cunha, with clubs like Leeds United and Aston Villa previously looking at the possibility of signing him.

Arsenal were also linked after the injury suffered by Gabriel Jesus, which is due to keep him out of action for the next three months and is a blow to their Premier League title bid.

For Wolves, though, this is a major deal: they are rock bottom of the Premier League, four points from safety and will have to pick up points quickly in order to avoid staying in the battle to stay up.
