Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has been ruled out of contention for the next Liverpool manager position, contrary to earlier reports suggesting he was being considered. It was rumored that O’Neil had been interviewed by the Reds as part of their search for a successor to Jurgen Klopp. However, sources indicate that these suggestions are inaccurate and O’Neil will not be in the running.
Despite having connections to FSG CEO of Football Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s new Sporting Director Richard Hughes, as all three previously met at Portsmouth, O’Neil’s limited experience as a manager in the Premier League made him an unlikely candidate for the Anfield job. In fact, he was dismissed from his role at Bournemouth just over a year ago by Hughes, who was then serving as the technical director at the club. Bournemouth ultimately chose Andoni Iraola as their new manager, and the Spaniard has since enjoyed a successful debut campaign.
Although O’Neil has been enhancing his reputation at Wolves, he is still in the early stages of his managerial career. This raises questions about whether he is ready to take on the responsibility of managing a top Premier League club like Liverpool.
So, who is in the running for the Liverpool manager position? According to bookmakers, Feyenoord manager Arne Slot is currently the frontrunner. Other names still being considered include Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel, and Thiago Motta.
UPDATE: Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has now emerged as a strong contender for the new Liverpool manager role.
