Newcastle forward Callum Wilson is aware of the threat Liverpool pose to his side’s chances of securing a top four finish in the Premier League. Newcastle currently sit third in the table with three points more than Liverpool, but have four tough fixtures coming up against Brighton, Leeds, Chelsea and Leicester. It has been 21 years since Newcastle last qualified for the Champions League and Wilson is conscious of the pressure that Liverpool are putting on them. He joked about the situation on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, saying “Liverpool need to relax!”
Wilson is aware that Newcastle still have plenty of work to do if they are to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition, describing the race as a “rollercoaster”. He believes that three wins out of their four remaining fixtures will be enough to secure their place in the Champions League. Despite his lighthearted comments, Wilson’s words highlight that his team’s situation is more precarious than it was a few weeks ago, having since suffered defeats against Arsenal and Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Liverpool have picked up six consecutive wins and are now within touching distance of Newcastle and Man United. Wilson’s warning to keep checking the rear-view mirrors is a reminder of the pressure his side are under.
