Leah Williamson Returns to England Squad Post-Injury
Leah Williamson, the talented centre-back, has made a triumphant return to the England squad after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that sidelined her since April. The 26-year-old will have the honor of captaining the Lionesses in their upcoming friendlies against Austria and Italy on 23 and 27 February respectively.
It’s been a long road to recovery for Williamson, who suffered the ACL injury just eight days after a match against Manchester United in the Women’s Super League (WSL). But her determination and hard work have paid off as she gradually made her comeback, first appearing as a substitute for Arsenal on 25 January and then starting in the Gunners’ match against West Ham on 4 February. Although she is yet to complete a full 90 minutes, her return to the pitch is an encouraging sign for both club and country.
Millie Bright, who led England in Williamson’s absence during the 2023 World Cup, unfortunately misses out on the squad due to a knee injury. The 30-year-old defender has not featured for Chelsea in 2024 and was unable to participate in the Lionesses’ Uefa Nations League matches in November. Bright’s absence creates an opportunity for other players to step up and showcase their skills on the international stage.
In addition to Williamson’s return, there are other notable inclusions in Sarina Wiegman’s squad. Uncapped Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Grace Clinton, only 20 years old, has earned her place in the team. Clinton’s impressive performances for her club have caught the attention of the England coaching staff, and she now has a chance to make her mark at the international level. Another player making a comeback is Manchester City’s Jess Park, who has been recalled after previously representing England.
However, there are a few surprising omissions from the squad. Manchester United’s Nikita Parris, who has been in red-hot form with seven goals in her last six games, did not make the cut. Wiegman’s decision not to include Parris raises eyebrows among fans and pundits alike, but it also highlights the depth and competition within the squad.
Looking ahead, England’s focus is on the 2025 European Championships, with the qualifying rounds set to begin in April. The draw for the tournament will take place on 5 March, and Wiegman’s squad will be eager to make a strong statement as they build towards the competition.
The England squad is packed with talent across all positions. In goal, Mary Earps, Hannah Hampton, and Khiara Keating provide a strong foundation. The defensive line features experienced players like Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, and Leah Williamson, alongside promising youngsters such as Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Maya le Tissier, Esme Morgan, and Lotte Wubben-Moy.
In midfield, the creative presence of Fran Kirby, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, and Keira Walsh will be crucial for England’s attacking play. The forward line is equally impressive, with Rachel Daly, Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead, and Alessia Russo ready to showcase their skills and find the back of the net.
Leah Williamson’s return to the England squad is a testament to her resilience and determination. Her comeback from a serious injury is an inspiration to all aspiring athletes. With her leadership as captain and a talented squad to support her, England’s Lionesses are ready to roar once again on the international stage.
