Why Raheem Sterling isn’t in Chelsea’s squad for Newcastle clash

Raheem Sterling was left out of Chelsea’s match day squad for their trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

On Thursday, the forward was named in England’s 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar having been a key part of the national team for the past eight years.

He was expected to start the clash at Newcastle, Chelsea’s last game before the season breaks for Qatar 2022.

However, the 27-year-old was surprisingly not even on the bench at St. James Park, with BT Sport reporting that Sterling had missed the game through illness but thankfully for England it is not said to be COVID-19 related.

This was confirmed by Chelsea manager Graham Potter, who said head of the match: ‘He was just ill yesterday. A bit of sickness.

‘Nothing too serious, just a few migraines for Raheem and he’s unable to travel.’

This should mean that Sterling should be perfectly fine to travel to Qatar and play in England’s first game against Iran on November 21.

Meanwhile, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, also in the England squad, was only on the bench for the Magpies, having been subbed off early during last week’s win over Southampton with illness.

‘He’s ok physically, well enough to be on the bench,’ Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said.

‘But he’s not trained with the group this week. He’s been training individually so I think this is the right decision.

‘He should be fine [for Qatar]. It’s an illness that has hit him quite hard but he’s on the mend.’
