The midfielder arrived in England from Atletico Madrid in 2020 and has been a regular for Arsenal ever since.

His rise in stature this season has led to many fans wondering why he has his first name on the back of his shirt rather than his surname.

Why does Thomas Partey have Thomas on his shirt?

The reason why Partey chooses to have Thomas on the back of his shirt is very straightforward.

After joining Arsenal three years ago, he told the club: “I’ve seen that there are Partey’s everywhere and even the photographer asked me why I don’t use Partey on my shirt.

“I said it’s because I started with Thomas and people are familiar with Thomas, so I need to go with Thomas.”

The Ghanaian has always used his first name rather than his surname on his shirt, doing the same at Atletico Madrid before arriving in England.

Early in 2022, Partey revealed that he had changed his name completely as he converted to Islam from Christianity.

He changed his name to ‘Yakubu’ but the move to adopt the name was not considered to be formal and therefore he would still be known as Partey.

This meant that he stuck with the name Thomas on the back of his shirt and he continues with the decision as he stars for Arsenal in the Premier League.
