France’s Euro 2024 opener against Austria saw a surprise omission in the form of Ibrahima Konate. The Liverpool defender was expected to be the first-choice partner to Dayot Upamecano in France’s defense. However, the teamsheet revealed that Arsenal’s William Saliba had been chosen instead.
France managed to secure a narrow 1-0 victory, but concerns were raised about Saliba’s performance. In his post-match press conference, Didier Deschamps explained why he opted for Saliba over Konate. Deschamps stated that he believed Saliba was more ready than Konate for such a crucial match. He also emphasized the importance of having a strong and calm defensive pairing, even though there were areas for improvement in their clearances.
Deschamps’ decision to rotate his center-backs depending on the fixture is not a new strategy. This was evident in France’s warm-up friendlies, where Konate, Upamecano, and Saliba shared the minutes. However, Upamecano was the only one to start both matches.
There is room for debate regarding whether Deschamps’ choice for the Group D opener was justified. Saliba’s mistimed challenge required N’Golo Kante to bail him out, allowing Patrick Wimmer a chance on goal. Konate’s form has also been questionable, as he lost his place in the Liverpool side towards the end of the season.
It remains to be seen whether Deschamps will reinstate Konate in the lineup for France’s upcoming clash with the Netherlands. This would set up an intriguing battle between Konate and his Liverpool teammate, Cody Gakpo.
