Erik ten Hag has revealed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka has missed Manchester United’s clash at Newcastle because of illness.

Wan-Bissaka was expected to start on Sunday at St. James’ Park in what is a pivotal game in the race for the Premier League top four.

Prior to kick-off the Red Devils were third in the table, three points ahead of the Magpies in fifth with Tottenham sandwiched between them.

However the 25-year-old was nowhere to be seen in the match day squad, with Diogo Dalot taking his place at right-back.

Ahead of the game, Ten Hag explained Wan-Bissaka’s absence, telling MUTV: ‘Yesterday, in the night he didn’t feel very good.

‘Overnight it got worse so therefore we made the decision that he stays out. So it’s illness.’

Having barely played in the first-half of the season, the defender has been an important player for United since the World Cup, making 22 appearances so far and winning the Carabao Cup – his first trophy with the club.

Dalot replacing Wan-Bissaka was one of three changes the manager made to his side from United’s last game – the FA Cup win over Fulham – with Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho making way for Raphael Varane and Antony.

He joins a fairly busy treatment room at Old Trafford, with Donny van de Beek, Christian Eriksen, Tom Heaton and Alejandro Garnacho currently on the sidelines.

Ten Hag was able to start Marcus Rashford against Newcastle however, after the English forward picked up a minor injury during the international break.
