Gary Neville’s initial reaction to England’s hotel for the World Cup in Qatar was slightly unenthusiastic, to say the least.
He and Three Lions legend David Beckham visited the Souq Al Wakra hotel, where Gareth Southgate’s side will be staying during the tournament later this year.
Speaking on YouTube channel ‘The Overlap’, Neville described the destination as ‘in the middle of nowhere’, as footage of the outside of the hotel was shown, which looks completely deserted.
And the Sky Sports pundit didn’t seem too impressed with the Three Lions’ accommodation for the tournament – and joked that he wouldn’t have been happy if he were staying there as a player.
“So, we’re in the middle of nowhere in Qatar and, believe it or not, we’re at the entrance to what’s going to be the England team hotel,” Neville said.
“What were we saying 16 years ago if we’re turning up and this is the entrance?”
Beckham replied: “What would you say?”
“Who chose this?!” Neville laughed. “It’s strange from out here when you look at it.
“I’m sure it’s lovely inside,” Beckham added, “It feels in the middle of nowhere, it’s on the beach – what more could you want?”
Beckham went on to call it the “perfect set up” and it even won Neville around after he had looked inside.
The ex-defender said: “To be honest, I was a bit worried when we pulled up outside! But when you get in here, this bit’s unbelievable.
“The players will love it in here, especially this courtyard.”
And, when asked about the World Cup itself and England’s chances of winning it, Beckham – who made 115 caps for the Three Lions and captained them on numerous occasions – was positive.
He went on to say that a winter edition of the competition could favour Southgate’s side, who have been in poor form recently.
He said: “Personally, I feel for our team, I feel like it (the move to November) is a huge opportunity.
“We never did use it as an excuse, but truth be told we came to the end of a gruelling season in the Premiership – the toughest league in the world – and you are tired, you do want a rest, you don’t have that time to recover from a tough season.
“But these players are coming into this tournament at a time where they’re at their peak.
“They’ve had their rest, they’re in the middle of their season, there’s no reason or no excuse for them not to be at the top of their game and at the top of their fitness.”
