When will Jadon Sancho return to action for Manchester United? England winger struggling with form and fitness as Red Devils launch title charge

Things haven’t gone to plan for Jadon Sancho at Manchester United since he swapped Germany for England in 2021.

The England international was one of the Bundesliga’s star players and looked to be destined to rip up the Premier League after leaving Borussia Dortmund.

But in his first season, he struggled to adapt to playing in England, while the turmoil at Old Trafford hardly would have helped.

However, under Erik ten Hag’s guidance, it was hoped the 22-year-old would spring into life this year.

He started ten of United’s first 12 league games and scored in wins over Liverpool and Leicester while performing well in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham, but he hasn’t played at all since October.

Why has Sancho not being playing for Man United?

Sancho was left on the bench for United’s game against West Ham and then missed the games against Aston Villa and Fulham with an unspecified illness.

The winger then didn’t travel with Ten Hag’s squad to Spain for their mid-season training camp as concerns over his fitness grew.

And after the World Cup break, his manager provided a concerning update on Sancho.

Speaking in December, Ten Hag said: “He’s not fit enough.

“We didn’t see him in the last games for United as he wasn’t in the right fitness state and he is now on an individual programme.

“We want him to finish that and hopefully see him back soon. We want to bring him back as quickly as possible but I can’t give a prognosis of when that will be.

“He was good [in pre-season], but also when the league started, he played some good games like Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal.

“After we got a drop of level and what happens sometimes, you don’t know why or what is causing it.

“That is what we’re doing now, trying to research and now we try to get him back there. It’s a combination of physical but also mental.”

    When will Sancho return?

Sancho has been given time off to recharge and build his personal fitness, but the player is back at Carrington now.

However, Ten Hag has yet to confirm a return for the forward and the games against Crystal Palace and Arsenal are likely to come too soon for Sancho.

He was spotted at Old Trafford at the weekend and has been training alone away from the first team.

Speaking about it recently, Ten Hag said: “The time is not now, but he is making progress.

“We will see when he is ready to return to the squad. He’s back in Manchester, he will start individual training.”

Hopefully, we will see Sancho soon and once fit and in form, he could provide the Red Devils with another lethal option.

Ten Hag has rejuvenated Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes and Sancho might be his next project.
